Rachel Morrison

Senior Workplace Relations Writer

Paddington, Brisbane, QLD

Award interpretation, underpayment recovery, casual conversion.

About Rachel

Rachel has been working in Australian workplace relations since 2016 — nine years of reading awards, explaining them badly the first few times, and eventually getting good at it. She started as an HR advisor at a mid-sized Queensland hospitality group that ran 14 venues across Brisbane and the Gold Coast. Most of her day was spent helping venue managers interpret the Restaurant Industry Award and chasing up missed overtime entries out of the POS export.

In 2019 she moved into retail, joining a national apparel chain as an employee relations partner covering the Queensland and Northern NSW stores. That's where the writing started. She'd been drafting internal explainers for store managers who kept mis-classifying junior staff, and one of the trade HR publications picked up a piece she'd written on the casual-to-permanent conversion clause. Two years of weekend freelancing later, FairWork Mate brought her on full-time in early 2024.

Her particular areas of interest: award interpretation, underpayment recovery, the casual conversion pathway introduced under the 2024 Closing Loopholes reforms, and Fair Work Commission full-bench decisions on penalty rates. She is less interested in the politics of IR than the practical mechanics — what a payslip actually needs to show, and what you do when it doesn't show it.

Graduate Diploma in Employment Relations from Griffith University (2018). Professional member of the Australian HR Institute (AHRI) since 2019. Based in Paddington, Brisbane. Coaches a junior touch football team on Tuesday nights.
