What must be on a payslip in Australia?

Under the Fair Work Regulations 2009 (reg 3.46), a payslip must include: employer name and ABN, employee name, pay period, date of payment, gross and net pay, hourly rate and hours worked, any loadings or allowances, deductions, superannuation contributions, and leave balances (if applicable). Employers face court penalties of up to $21,840 per contravention for an individual (more for companies), and Fair Work Ombudsman infringement notices of up to $2,184 per breach for an individual and $10,920 for a corporation (checked September 2026).

When must an employer issue a payslip?

Employers must issue payslips within 1 working day of paying an employee. Payslips can be electronic (email, online portal) or paper. Failure to provide payslips on time is a breach of the Fair Work Act.

What if my payslip is missing information?

If your payslip is missing required information, first raise it with your employer. If they don't fix it, you can contact the Fair Work Ombudsman (13 13 94) or lodge a complaint. Missing payslip items may indicate other compliance issues like underpayment.
