Does the Child Care Subsidy cover vacation care?

Yes. Vacation care (school-holiday programs run by approved providers) is covered by the Child Care Subsidy as Outside School Hours Care (OSHC) — the same category as before- and after-school care. For 2026-27, the hourly rate cap is $13.30 for a school-age child and $15.19 for a child below school age attending the same service. Your CCS percentage applies to the lower of the provider's hourly fee and that cap. Source: Services Australia, type of child care you use can affect Child Care Subsidy, checked 21 July 2026.

The cap is the fine print that stings: if a holiday program charges $130 for a 10-hour day, that's $13 an hour — under the cap, so your full CCS percentage applies. A premium program charging $160 a day ($16/hour) leaves you paying 100% of the $2.70/hour above the cap on top of your normal gap. Model your exact program fee with our Child Care Subsidy Calculator.

How many subsidised hours do you get in the school holidays?

At least 72 hours per fortnight, for every CCS-eligible family. Since 5 January 2026, the 3-Day Guarantee replaced the old activity test: 72 subsidised hours a fortnight is the floor regardless of how much you work or study. You get 100 hours per fortnight if you (and your partner — Centrelink uses the lower of the two) do more than 48 hours a fortnight of recognised participation such as work or study, if the child is Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander, or if you get Additional Child Care Subsidy. Source: Services Australia, hours of subsidised child care, checked 21 July 2026.

Here's where holidays bite: vacation-care days are long. Ten-hour days across a two-week holiday block is 100 hours in one fortnight. On the 72-hour floor, only about 7 of those 10 days are subsidised — roughly 28 hours land at full fee (about $266 at $9.50/hour). If both parents work full-time you'll usually clear the 48-hour participation bar and get the full 100 hours, but a parent working part-time can hit the 72-hour cap mid-holidays. Check your hours tier before you book, not after.

What does a week of vacation care actually cost after CCS?

A worked example at 2026-27 rates: family income $120,000, one child in Year 2, vacation care at $95 for a 10-hour day ($9.50/hour, under the $13.30 cap). The CCS percentage is 90% minus 1 point per $5,000 over $88,520 — at $120,000 that's 83.7%.

LineAmount
Daily fee (10 hours × $9.50)$95.00
CCS at 83.7% of $9.50/hour$79.52/day
Less 5% withheld against a balancing debt−$3.98/day
Paid to your provider$75.54/day
Your gap fee per day$19.46
Gap for a 5-day holiday week$97.30

If your income estimate is accurate, the withheld 5% comes back after balancing, taking the true cost to $15.48 a day. Income test source: Services Australia, your income can affect Child Care Subsidy ($88,520 / $538,520 thresholds), checked 21 July 2026.

What happens if my child skips a booked vacation care day?

CCS still pays — up to a limit. Families get 42 allowable absence days per child, per financial year, usable for any reason with no evidence needed, provided the session was booked and fees were charged. The counter reset on 1 July 2026, so holiday-program no-shows this month draw on a fresh allowance of 42. Extra absences beyond 42 can be covered in defined circumstances (like illness with evidence). Source: Australian Government Department of Education, how to manage absences, checked 21 July 2026.

Two wrinkles for holiday bookings. First, absences only attract CCS if you're still charged a fee — if the provider waives the fee for a cancelled day, there's nothing to subsidise (and nothing deducted from your 42). Second, in shared-care arrangements the 42 days belong to the child, not to each parent, so both households draw on the same pool. If you're heading overseas, CCS also stops after 6 weeks away from Australia.

Can you claim CCS for a holiday program if you don't normally use childcare?

Yes, but set it up before the holidays, not during. CCS isn't automatic — you need a Centrelink CCS claim (done once, in your Centrelink online account through myGov) and a Complying Written Arrangement with the vacation-care provider, and the provider must be CCS-approved. Council and commercial holiday programs usually are; casual sports clinics and drop-in workshops usually aren't — ask "are you CCS-approved?" before you pay a deposit.

Claims can take weeks to assess, and CCS is only backdated up to 28 days. With the spring school holidays due in late September, a family who lodges a claim now is subsidised from day one; one who lodges in week two of the holidays wears full fees until the claim is processed (then gets some back). Estimate what you'll actually pay — including whether the 72- or 100-hour tier covers your booking pattern — with the Child Care Subsidy Calculator, and if you're also getting FTB, run the FTB Debt Checker while you're at it: the same income estimate drives both payments.

Frequently asked questions

Is vacation care covered by the Child Care Subsidy?

Yes. Vacation care at a CCS-approved provider is subsidised as Outside School Hours Care. For 2026-27 the hourly rate cap is $13.30 for school-age children, and your normal CCS percentage applies to the lower of the provider's hourly fee and the cap.

How much is vacation care after the subsidy?

Depends on your CCS percentage and the program's fee. At a $95, 10-hour day and family income of $120,000 (CCS 83.7%), the gap is about $19.46 a day including the 5% withholding — roughly $97 for a five-day week. Families under $88,520 get 90% CCS; the percentage falls 1 point per $5,000 above that.

Do school holidays use up my subsidised hours faster?

Yes. Vacation-care days are typically 10 hours, so full-time holiday care is about 100 hours a fortnight. The 3-Day Guarantee floor is 72 subsidised hours; you need more than 48 hours a fortnight of recognised participation (work, study — measured on the lower-earning partner) for the 100-hour tier.

What if my child is sick and misses a booked holiday-program day?

CCS still pays if fees were charged, using one of your 42 allowable absence days per child per financial year (no evidence needed, any reason). The allowance reset on 1 July 2026. Beyond 42 days, additional absences need a listed reason such as illness, with evidence.
