How Breaks Work in Practice
- •Under the General Retail Award the two rest breaks are split — one in each half of the shift.
- •Your meal break must come early enough that you don't work more than 5 hours straight (General Retail, Clerks).
- •A typical 7-hour retail shift: rest break, meal break, then a second rest break.
- •The meal break is unpaid, so a 7-hour span with a 30-minute meal is 6.5 hours of paid work.
What if you don't get your breaks?
If your employer isn't giving you the breaks you're entitled to under your award, that's a breach. Here's what to do.
- Raise it with your manager first — in writing if possible.
- Keep a record of every shift where you were denied a break.
- Contact the Fair Work Ombudsman on 13 13 94 or lodge an online complaint.
