How Breaks Work in Practice
•Typical 12-hour nursing shift: rest at 2 hrs, meal at 5 hrs, rest at 7 hrs, meal at 10 hrs, rest at 11 hrs.
•Two meal breaks is standard under the Nurses Award and HIGA for 12-hour shifts.
•You must have 10 consecutive hours off between shifts. If not, your employer pays double-time until you get the break.
•Hours beyond 8 are usually overtime. Hours beyond 10 often attract double-time.
•12-hour shifts count as 10 hours of paid work after the two unpaid meal breaks.
