How Breaks Work in Practice
•Your meal break must be scheduled so you don't work more than 5 hours straight without one.
•On a typical 6-hour shift, expect a rest break at around the 2-3 hour mark and a meal break before the 5-hour mark.
•The meal break is unpaid — your 6-hour shift becomes 5.5 hours of paid work.
•Rest breaks count as time worked. You're paid for them.
What if you don't get your breaks?
If your employer isn't giving you the breaks you're entitled to under your award, that's a breach. Here's what to do.
Raise it with your manager first — in writing if possible.
Keep a record of every shift where you were denied a break.
