Fast Food Pay Rates FAQ

What is the minimum pay rate for fast food workers in 2026?

The minimum base rate for fast food workers is $27.81/hr (Level 1) under the Fast Food Industry Award. Casual workers get $34.76/hr. Level 3 (shift supervisors) earn $29.91/hr base.

What about junior rates in fast food?

The Fast Food Award has junior rates for workers under 21. A 16-year-old earns about 50% of the adult rate, 17-year-olds get 60%, and it steps up each year until you hit the full adult rate at 21.

Is fast food covered by the same award as restaurants?

No. Fast food outlets are covered by the Fast Food Industry Award (MA000003), while sit-down restaurants fall under the Restaurant Industry Award (MA000119). The rates are similar but not identical, particularly for penalty rates.
