Who covers BP workers — award or agreement?

BP runs one of the larger fuel and convenience retail networks in the country, with service stations combining fuel bowsers, a convenience store and often a food-to-go counter. Sites are a mix of company-run and franchisee or dealer-operated stations, with attendant and convenience-store staff covering both fuel sales and shop trade.

Service station and convenience roles sit on the Vehicle Repair, Services and Retail Award 2020, under its retail, service and repair stream. Our corpus holds no current BP Australia enterprise agreement, so the award tables below are what should be on the payslip, whether the site is company-run or franchised.

The federal awards relevant to BP roles:

Fuel retail award floor (1 July 2026)

Service-station and convenience-store staff sit on the retail, service and repair (RS&R) stream of the Vehicle Repair, Services and Retail Award 2020 (MA000089):

ClassificationPermanentCasual (incl. 25%)
RS&R Level 1 — driveway attendant, store assistant (entry)$25.74/hr$32.17/hr
RS&R Level 2 — roadhouse attendant cooking takeaway$26.44/hr$33.05/hr
RS&R Level 4 — console operator; roadhouse attendant cooking other than takeaway$27.97/hr$34.96/hr

Console operators working alone, night shifts and weekends attract the award's own loadings — the award publishes loaded console-operator rates for Monday–Friday, weekend and overtime hours. Check a specific shift with the penalty rates calculator.

Does BP have an enterprise agreement?

As at 25 September 2026, our corpus of 14,141 federally registered enterprise agreements holds no current agreement for BP. That usually means one of three things: the employer pays on the award (or on individual contracts above it), the agreement covering you is registered under a different entity name (check the employer name on your payslip and search our agreements database), or — for state public-sector employers — pay is set by a state award or agreement outside the federal register. If you have a copy of an agreement that names BP, it beats the award figures above.

Common fuel retail pay issues at BP

The patterns worth checking on a BP payslip:

  • Console operators working alone at night without the award's loaded rates.
  • Junior rates not stepping up, and the wrong RS&R level for supervisory duties.
  • Unpaid opens, closes and cash-ups.
  • Franchise sites paying below the award — the franchisee is the employer, but the award still applies.

What to do if your pay looks wrong

Match your payslip to your classification in the agreement (or the award tables above), and price any gap with our back-pay calculator. Raise it in writing with payroll or your manager first — most underpayments are fixed at that step. Unresolved, the Fair Work Ombudsman (13 13 94) recovers underpayments at no cost, up to six years back, and your union can run the claim for you. Not sure which instrument covers you?
