Who covers Ampol workers — award or agreement?
Ampol runs the country's largest fuel retail network — company-operated Ampol and Ampol Foodary sites plus franchised stores — alongside the Lytton refinery, terminals and a fuel distribution fleet. Console operators and store staff make up most of the workforce, with refinery operators, tanker drivers and depot staff behind them.
Service-station and Foodary staff at company-operated sites are covered by the Vehicle Repair, Services and Retail Award 2020, which has its own console-operator and driveway classifications; franchised sites are separate employers on the same award. Ampol's refinery, terminal and distribution businesses have their own enterprise agreements (below).

Fuel retail award floor (1 July 2026)
Service-station and convenience-store staff sit on the retail, service and repair (RS&R) stream of the Vehicle Repair, Services and Retail Award 2020 (MA000089):
| Classification | Permanent | Casual (incl. 25%) |
|---|---|---|
| RS&R Level 1 — driveway attendant, store assistant (entry) | $25.74/hr | $32.17/hr |
| RS&R Level 2 — roadhouse attendant cooking takeaway | $26.44/hr | $33.05/hr |
| RS&R Level 4 — console operator; roadhouse attendant cooking other than takeaway | $27.97/hr | $34.96/hr |
Console operators working alone, night shifts and weekends attract the award's own loadings — the award publishes loaded console-operator rates for Monday–Friday, weekend and overtime hours. Check a specific shift with the penalty rates calculator.

We don't reproduce agreement dollar figures here — the agreement covering your site, state and stream is the document to read. Find your agreement, then your classification, then your pay point, and compare it with your payslip. The award tables on this page are the floor every one of these agreements must beat.
Common fuel retail pay issues at Ampol
The patterns worth checking on a Ampol payslip:
- Console operators working alone at night without the award's loaded rates.
- Junior rates not stepping up, and the wrong RS&R level for supervisory duties.
- Unpaid opens, closes and cash-ups.
- Franchise sites paying below the award — the franchisee is the employer, but the award still applies.
What to do if your pay looks wrong
Match your payslip to your classification in the agreement (or the award tables above), and price any gap with our back-pay calculator. Raise it in writing with payroll or your manager first — most underpayments are fixed at that step. Unresolved, the Fair Work Ombudsman (13 13 94) recovers underpayments at no cost, up to six years back, and your union can run the claim for you. Not sure which instrument covers you?
