Who covers AGL workers — award or agreement?

AGL generates and retails electricity and gas, running major generation assets including the Loy Yang and Macquarie power stations alongside its household and business energy retail operations. Its workforce is entirely permanent rather than casual and covers power-station operators and maintenance trades, wind and renewable-generation staff, and retail and customer-service teams.

The Electrical Power Industry Award 2020 is the floor for generation and network roles at sites like Loy Yang and Macquarie. AGL's retail and contact-centre staff may instead sit on the Contract Call Centres Award 2020 or the Clerks — Private Sector Award 2020 depending on which AGL entity employs them, so check the employer name on your payslip. AGL has registered enterprise agreements covering individual power stations, wind operations and state-based functions — listed below where our corpus holds them — and each must leave employees better off overall than the relevant award.

The AGL enterprise agreements

Enterprise agreements set rates above the award, with their own classification structures and allowances. Current AGL agreements in our corpus (6 in total):

We don't reproduce agreement dollar figures here — the agreement covering your site, state and stream is the document to read. Find your agreement, then your classification, then your pay point, and compare it with your payslip. The award tables on this page are the floor every one of these agreements must beat.

Common electricity pay issues at AGL

The patterns worth checking on a AGL payslip:

  • Agreement pay levels not stepping up with qualifications and competencies.
  • On-call, call-out and standby allowances missed or under-paid.
  • Travel time to remote sites unpaid.
  • Overtime during storm and outage response paid at the wrong rate.

What to do if your pay looks wrong

Match your payslip to your classification in the agreement (or the award tables above), and price any gap with our back-pay calculator. Raise it in writing with payroll or your manager first — most underpayments are fixed at that step. Unresolved, the Fair Work Ombudsman (13 13 94) recovers underpayments at no cost, up to six years back, and your union can run the claim for you. Not sure which instrument covers you?
