Who covers Essential Energy workers — award or agreement?
Essential Energy is the NSW Government-owned distributor that runs the poles and wires across 95 per cent of the state's land area, from the coast to the far west, out of depots in more than 90 regional towns. Linespeople, field workers, substation and metering technicians, dispatchers and depot staff make up the workforce.
Essential Energy's pay is set by its enterprise agreement (below). The federal safety net is the Electrical Power Industry Award 2020, tabled below; the agreement sits well above it, and the award mainly matters as the benchmark in bargaining rounds.
The federal awards relevant to Essential Energy roles:

The Essential Energy enterprise agreements
Enterprise agreements set rates above the award, with their own classification structures and allowances. Current Essential Energy agreements in our corpus (2 in total):
- Essential Energy Far West (Electricity) Enterprise Agreement 2024 — approved August 2025, nominal expiry 30 June 2027.
- Essential Energy Enterprise Agreement 2024 — approved April 2025, nominal expiry 30 June 2027.
We don't reproduce agreement dollar figures here — the agreement covering your site, state and stream is the document to read. Find your agreement, then your classification, then your pay point, and compare it with your payslip. The award tables on this page are the floor every one of these agreements must beat.
Common electricity pay issues at Essential Energy
The patterns worth checking on a Essential Energy payslip:
- Agreement pay levels not stepping up with qualifications and competencies.
- On-call, call-out and standby allowances missed or under-paid.
- Travel time to remote sites unpaid.
- Overtime during storm and outage response paid at the wrong rate.
What to do if your pay looks wrong
Match your payslip to your classification in the agreement (or the award tables above), and price any gap with our back-pay calculator. Raise it in writing with payroll or your manager first — most underpayments are fixed at that step. Unresolved, the Fair Work Ombudsman (13 13 94) recovers underpayments at no cost, up to six years back, and your union can run the claim for you. Not sure which instrument covers you?
