Who covers Serco workers — award or agreement?

Serco runs immigration detention centres, correctional facilities, hospital non-clinical services (including Fiona Stanley Hospital in Perth), defence support and contact centres under government contracts. Its Australian workforce is correctional and detention officers, hospital support and patient-transport staff, defence-base staff and call-centre agents.

Serco negotiates separate enterprise agreements for each contract (below). Underneath them sit the Security Services Industry Award 2020 for detention and custodial officers and the Health Professionals and Support Services Award 2020 for hospital support roles, with the Clerks Award for contact centres. The first two are tabled below.

The federal awards relevant to Serco roles:

  • Security Services Industry Award 2020 (MA000016)
  • Health Professionals and Support Services Award 2020 (MA000027)

The Serco enterprise agreements

Enterprise agreements set rates above the award, with their own classification structures and allowances. Current Serco agreements in our corpus (17 in total):

Plus 9 more — search "Serco" in our agreements database.

We don't reproduce agreement dollar figures here — the agreement covering your site, state and stream is the document to read. Find your agreement, then your classification, then your pay point, and compare it with your payslip. The award tables on this page are the floor every one of these agreements must beat.

Common contracted services pay issues at Serco

The patterns worth checking on a Serco payslip:

  • Level 1 for control-room, senior or supervisory work.
  • Night, weekend and overtime loadings absorbed into a flat rate that doesn't beat the award for the roster.
  • Unpaid handover, briefing and travel between sites.
  • Long shifts without the award's overtime and rest-break rules.

What to do if your pay looks wrong

Match your payslip to your classification in the agreement (or the award tables above), and price any gap with our back-pay calculator. Raise it in writing with payroll or your manager first — most underpayments are fixed at that step. Unresolved, the Fair Work Ombudsman (13 13 94) recovers underpayments at no cost, up to six years back, and your union can run the claim for you. Not sure which instrument covers you?
