How long do I have to lodge a WorkCover Queensland claim?

Under s131 of the Workers' Compensation and Rehabilitation Act 2003 (Qld), you must apply for compensation within 6 months after your entitlement arises — generally the date of your injury, or the date of diagnosis for a gradual-onset condition. A medical tribunal can allow a late application in limited special circumstances, and the insurer has some discretion, but don't rely on either.

How quickly must my employer report my injury to WorkCover?

Under s133, your employer must report your injury immediately after the earliest of becoming aware of it, you reporting it, or the insurer requesting it — with a hard backstop of 8 business days. Breaching this duty is an offence.

Am I covered if I'm an independent contractor?

Not automatically. Independent contractors are generally not covered under a principal's WorkCover policy, but some are "deemed workers" under specific statutory criteria. Whether you're a "worker" turns on PAYG withholding status and the substance of the working relationship, not your job title — this is fact-specific, so get advice on your actual arrangement.

What happens if I miss the 6-month deadline?
