How much is Carer Payment in 2026?

From 20 September 2026, the maximum Carer Payment is $1,237.70 per fortnight for a single person and $933.00 per fortnight each for partnered recipients. Carer Payment is paid at the same rate as the Age Pension. Source: Department of Social Services indexation rates, 20 September 2026.

What is the difference between Carer Payment and Carer Allowance?

Carer Payment is an income support payment for people who are unable to work because they provide constant care. It is income and asset tested. Carer Allowance ($162.60 per fortnight) is a supplement you can receive on top of Carer Payment or another payment. It has no assets test, but it IS income tested: your and your partner's combined adjusted taxable income must be under $250,000 a year. Carer Allowance is adjusted on 1 January each year, not in March or September.

Can I work while receiving Carer Payment?

Yes. Services Australia allows paid work or self-employment of up to 100 hours in a 4 week period while receiving Carer Payment. It is measured across the 4 weeks rather than as a weekly cap, so the hours do not have to be spread evenly. The income test separately allows you to earn up to $226 per fortnight (single) before your payment is reduced. That free area is the 1 July 2026 figure. Check your own circumstances with Services Australia before relying on this.
