Who covers John Holland workers — award or agreement?
John Holland is one of the country's largest construction and rail companies, building tunnels, rail lines, roads, hospitals and defence facilities, and operating and maintaining rail networks (including its stake in Yarra Trams and Metro Trains). Civil workers, tradespeople, plant operators, rail maintainers and project staff make up the workforce.
John Holland negotiates project and business enterprise agreements with the construction and rail unions (below). The federal safety net on construction sites is the Building and Construction General On-site Award 2020, tabled below; rail operations sit on the Rail Industry Award.

Common construction pay issues at John Holland
The patterns worth checking on a John Holland payslip:
- Site allowances, tool and travel allowances missed from the agreement.
- RDOs and the 36-hour week not honoured on projects that use them.
- Wet-weather and inclement-weather pay withheld.
- Wrong CW level for the tickets and skills actually used.
What to do if your pay looks wrong
Match your payslip to your classification in the agreement (or the award tables above), and price any gap with our back-pay calculator. Raise it in writing with payroll or your manager first — most underpayments are fixed at that step. Unresolved, the Fair Work Ombudsman (13 13 94) recovers underpayments at no cost, up to six years back, and your union can run the claim for you. Not sure which instrument covers you?
