When is the Single Touch Payroll finalisation declaration due?

Your STP finalisation declaration is due by 14 July each year, for the financial year that just ended. Finalising is what flips each employee's income statement to 'tax ready' in ATO online services through myGov and lets the ATO pre-fill their tax return.

What happens if I can't finalise STP by 14 July?

If you genuinely can't finalise by the due date, you need to apply to the ATO for a deferral rather than simply lodging late. Keep the ATO's written confirmation with your payroll records — a deferral moves the deadline, it doesn't remove the obligation to finalise.

What does STP Phase 2 require me to report?

STP Phase 2 requires gross pay to be reported disaggregated into its components — paid leave, allowances, overtime, bonuses and commissions, directors' fees, and salary sacrifice — rather than as a single gross figure, along with employment and tax details such as employment basis, tax treatment and cessation reason.

Does the 14 July deadline apply to closely held payees?

Not always. Closely held payees — family members, directors or shareholders paid directly from the business profits or distributions — can have reporting concessions and different finalisation timing, so check the closely held payee rules rather than assuming 14 July covers everyone on your payroll.
