Sources: The Statutory Holidays Act 2000 (Tas) sets the public holiday list. Penalty rates come from modern awards under the Fair Work Act 2009. Always cross-check with the current state gazette for any year-of substitutions when a holiday falls on a weekend.

TAS quirks worth knowing

  • Eight Hours Day (the second Monday in March) is the Tasmanian equivalent of Labour Day — uniquely named.

  • Recreation Day on the first Monday in November is a public holiday only in northern Tasmania (north of and including Oatlands). Southern Tasmania observes the Royal Hobart Show Day in October instead.

  • Easter Tuesday is a public holiday for some industries in Tasmania (state public service, banks) but not all — a frequent source of cross-industry confusion.
