What is annual leave loading in Australia?

Annual leave loading is an extra payment on top of your base pay rate while you are on annual leave. It is typically 17.5% of your base pay for the period of leave taken. Leave loading was introduced to compensate employees for the loss of overtime and penalty rate opportunities while on leave.

Is annual leave loading 17.5% for everyone?

No. The 17.5% rate is the most common leave loading rate and applies under many modern awards. However, the rate can vary depending on your award, enterprise agreement, or employment contract. Some agreements provide different rates or no leave loading at all. Leave loading is not a universal NES entitlement — it depends on your specific industrial instrument.

Is leave loading paid on unused annual leave?

Whether leave loading is paid out on unused annual leave when employment ends depends on your award or enterprise agreement. Many awards require leave loading to be paid on termination, but some do not. Check your specific award or agreement, or contact the Fair Work Ombudsman for guidance on your entitlements.

Do casual workers get leave loading?

No. Casual employees do not accrue annual leave and therefore do not receive leave loading. Instead, casual employees receive a casual loading (typically 25%) on top of their base hourly rate, which compensates for the lack of paid leave entitlements.
