How much is Austudy in 2026?

From 1 January 2026, the maximum basic Austudy rates per fortnight are $677.20 (single or partnered, no children), $854.20 (single with children) and $733.20 (partnered with children). Higher rates of $799.70 (single) or $733.20 (partnered) apply if you were on another income support payment for at least 26 of the last 39 weeks before starting study. How much can I earn on Austudy before it reduces?

You can earn $539 per fortnight before Austudy reduces. Between $539 and $646 it reduces by 50 cents per dollar; above $646 the reduction is $53.50 plus 60 cents per dollar. A single student with no children cuts out at $1,697.17 per fortnight, and a single parent at $1,995.84. The Student Income Bank lets you bank credits from low-earning fortnights to offset higher-earning ones.

Can I get Austudy if I am under 25?

No. Austudy is for full-time students and Australian Apprentices aged 25 or over. If you are 16 to 24, claim Youth Allowance instead — the away-from-home rates are the same ($677.20 per fortnight for a single student), but a parental means test can apply if you are considered dependent.

Does Austudy have an assets test?

Yes. Austudy cancels if your assets exceed the allowance limits: $333,000 (homeowner) or $600,000 (non-homeowner) if you are single, and $499,000 or $766,000 combined for couples (verified July 2026). Your principal home is not counted. This calculator covers the income test only.
