How do I calculate the cost of a shift?

To calculate the total cost of a shift, multiply the base hourly rate by the applicable penalty rate multiplier for the day/time of work, then multiply by the number of hours worked. Add superannuation (12%) on top. This tool automates the calculation for you based on your award.

Do penalty rates apply to the whole shift?

It depends. Penalty rates for weekend or public holiday work typically apply to the entire shift. However, evening or late-night penalty rates may only apply to hours worked within specific timeframes defined by your award.

Do employers pay super on penalty rates?

Yes. Superannuation is generally calculated on Ordinary Time Earnings (OTE), which includes penalty rates for hours that are part of ordinary hours of work. Overtime penalty rates are excluded from OTE.
