How much notice do I have to give when I resign in Australia?

Notice you give when resigning is usually set by your employment contract or the applicable modern award or enterprise agreement — not the NES. The NES notice scale (1–4 weeks, + 1 week if you're 45+ with 2+ years of service) applies to notice your employer must give YOU on termination. Check your contract or award, or call the Fair Work Ombudsman on 13 13 94 for help.

Do I have to give notice in writing?

Most contracts require written notice of resignation. Even where they don't, a written letter creates a clear record of the date you resigned and the last day you proposed — which helps if there's any later dispute about final pay or accrued leave.
