Do I Need a SWMS? High Risk Construction Work Checker

Pick your state, confirm it's construction work, and tick any high risk construction work that applies. The tool tells you whether a Safe Work Method Statement is required, what it must contain, who prepares it and how long to keep it.

Last verified: 20 June 2026

A Safe Work Method Statement (SWMS) is required before any high risk construction work starts — 18 categories under WHS Regulation reg 291, or 19 under Victoria's OHS Regulations 2017 reg 322.

Is this construction work?

Construction work includes building, alteration, repair, maintenance, demolition, excavation and related work on a structure. A SWMS only applies to construction work.
