Public holidays 2027 at a glance

Every state and territory has published its 2027 public holiday list, and the Fair Work Ombudsman has collected them on its 2027 public holidays page. Only one statewide date is still open: Victoria's Friday before the AFL Grand Final, which depends on the 2027 AFL fixture.

Three things are different about 2027:

  • Anzac Day falls on a Sunday (25 April). States treat this differently. Some add Monday 26 April as an extra holiday, two move the holiday to the Monday, and three keep it on the Sunday with no Monday off.
  • Christmas Day is a Saturday and Boxing Day is a Sunday. Every state and territory gives two weekday holidays on Monday 27 December and Tuesday 28 December. Tasmania handles it slightly differently (see below).
  • Easter is early: Good Friday is 26 March and Easter Monday is 29 March.

The dates every jurisdiction shares:

The state pages below each have a full table. Our state public holiday pages also show the next holiday where you live.

Anzac Day 2027 falls on a Sunday. Do you get Monday off?

It depends on your state or territory:

The ACT result is new. Under its Holidays Act the Monday is the Anzac Day holiday when 25 April is a Sunday. On 14 August 2026 the ACT Government also declared Sunday 25 April 2027 a public holiday, so ACT workers get both days (ACT Government announcement). The ACT has said it will consult on a permanent rule from 2028.

For pay, this matters most to weekend workers. In Queensland and the NT, someone who works Sunday 25 April is paid ordinary Sunday rates, and the public holiday rate applies on Monday 26 April. In NSW, WA and the ACT, public holiday rates apply on both days.

Christmas 2027: why 27 and 28 December are both public holidays

In 2027, Christmas Day falls on a Saturday and Boxing Day on a Sunday. Every state and territory adds weekday holidays to make up for it:

  • Monday 27 December: additional public holiday for Christmas Day
  • Tuesday 28 December: additional public holiday for Boxing Day (Proclamation Day in South Australia)

In NSW, Victoria, Queensland, SA, WA, the ACT and the NT, the weekend days stay public holidays as well. That means four public holidays in a row, from Saturday 25 to Tuesday 28 December. If you work on the Saturday or Sunday, public holiday rates apply to that shift too.

Tasmania is the exception. It keeps Saturday 25 December as Christmas Day and adds Monday 27 December, but it moves Boxing Day to Tuesday 28 December. Sunday 26 December is not a public holiday in Tasmania.

The part-day holidays also apply. In Queensland, Christmas Eve (Friday 24 December) is a public holiday from 6pm to midnight. In South Australia and the Northern Territory, both Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve (Friday 31 December) are public holidays from 7pm to midnight. Public holiday rates apply only to the hours inside that window. Hours before 6pm or 7pm are paid at the ordinary Friday rate.

What you get paid on a public holiday in 2027

If you don't work the public holiday: full-time and part-time employees who would normally have worked that day are paid their ordinary rate for the hours they would have worked (Fair Work Act s 116). Casuals are not paid for a public holiday they don't work. If a holiday falls on a day you don't normally work, such as a Saturday holiday for a Monday-to-Friday employee, you get nothing extra.

If you work the public holiday: your modern award sets the rate. It is a percentage of the minimum hourly rate for your classification. Some common examples:

AwardFull-time / part-timeCasual (includes the 25% loading)
General Retail (MA000004, cl 22.1 Table 12)225%250%
Hospitality (MA000009)225%250%
Fast Food (MA000003)225%250%
Restaurant (MA000119)225%250%
Clerks: Private Sector (MA000002)250%275%
Nurses (MA000034)200%200% of the casual rate

Retail example, using the Level 1 adult minimum of $27.81 an hour (from 1 July 2026): a full-time or part-time employee earns $62.57 an hour on a public holiday, and a casual earns $69.53 an hour. The 250% and 275% Retail figures you may see quoted are overtime rates for public holiday work, not the ordinary public holiday rate. Don't apply the percentage to the casual rate. The casual percentage is applied to the minimum hourly rate and already includes the loading.

The rates above apply until 30 June 2027. The Fair Work Commission's 2027 Annual Wage Review will set new minimums from the first full pay period on or after 1 July 2027, so King's Birthday in WA and Queensland, Labour Day in NSW, SA and the ACT, Melbourne Cup and the Christmas holidays will be paid on the new rates. Enterprise agreements can set different rates, but not below the award overall.

Work out your own figure with the public holiday pay calculator, or check every award's percentages on the public holiday rates page.

For employers: planning for 2027

  • Check where each employee is based. Employees get the public holidays of the place where their job is based, not where they happen to be working that day (Fair Work Ombudsman). A Melbourne-based employee working in Sydney on Melbourne Cup Day is still entitled to the holiday.
  • Anzac Day weekend. If you run payroll in more than one state, a Monday 26 April shift is ordinary time in Victoria, SA and Tasmania and a public holiday everywhere else. A Sunday 25 April shift is a public holiday everywhere except Queensland and the NT.
  • Christmas week. Rosters covering Saturday 25 to Tuesday 28 December 2027 can include four public holidays (three in Tasmania). Permanent staff who normally work Monday and Tuesday are paid for 27 and 28 December even if you close.
  • Requests to work. You can ask an employee to work a public holiday. They can refuse if the request is unreasonable or their refusal is reasonable, taking into account things like the type of business, the employee's circumstances, the pay rate and how much notice you gave (Fair Work Act s 114).
  • Swapping days. Many awards let an employer and employee agree to substitute another day for a public holiday. Retail is one example (MA000004 cl 33.2). Put the agreement in writing and keep it with your time and wages records.
