How much is government paid parental leave in Australia in 2026?

From 1 July 2026, government Paid Parental Leave (PLP) is 26 weeks (up from 24 weeks). It is paid at the national minimum wage rate of $1,004.90 per week before tax. Of the 26 weeks, 4 weeks are reserved for the non-birth partner on a "use it or lose it" basis, with the remaining 22 weeks shareable between partners.

Can I take 12 months unpaid parental leave even if my employer doesn't offer paid leave?

Yes. Under the Fair Work Act 2009, every eligible employee has a statutory right to up to 12 months of unpaid parental leave. You do not need your employer's permission — it is a legal entitlement once you have completed 12 months of continuous service. You can also request a further 12 months (the employer can only refuse on reasonable business grounds).

Do I get super on paid parental leave?

Yes. From 1 July 2025, superannuation is paid on government Paid Parental Leave at the Superannuation Guarantee rate of 12%. The ATO pays this directly into your super fund after the end of each financial year — it does not come from your employer. Super on employer top-up weeks is your employer's obligation and depends on your enterprise agreement.

Can I use annual leave during parental leave?

Yes. You can use accrued annual leave and long service leave during parental leave to supplement income. This is paid at your normal pay rate and can bridge the gap between government PLP (paid at minimum wage) and your regular salary. Some employers require you to apply in writing.

How does employer-paid parental leave work with government PPL?

The two schemes can run concurrently (a 'top-up' model, where the employer pays the gap between government PLP and your full wage) or sequentially (employer pays full wage for X weeks, then government PLP kicks in).
