What covers Toll workers — award or agreement?

Toll Group employs around 16,000 people in Australia across express freight, logistics and warehousing. Much of the workforce is covered by enterprise agreements — the biggest is the Toll – TWU Enterprise Agreement 2023–2026 (approved December 2023), which passed its nominal expiry on 30 June 2026 and keeps operating while a replacement is bargained. Site deals also exist, such as the Toll (Brisbane Central DC) and UWU Enterprise Agreement 2025 (approved March 2026, nominal expiry 31 October 2028) and the Toll / UWU Defence Distribution Centres Enterprise Agreement 2025 (nominal expiry 30 June 2028).

The awards underneath are the Road Transport and Distribution Award 2020 (MA000038) for drivers and distribution work, and the Storage Services and Wholesale Award 2020 (MA000084) in warehousing. Agreement rates sit above these floors — the tables below are the minimum any Toll deal must beat.

Driver award floor by grade (1 July 2026)

The Road Transport and Distribution Award grades drivers by vehicle type. Key adult minimums from 1 July 2026 (general transport stream, 38-hour week):

Grade (typical work)PermanentCasual (incl. 25%)
Grade 1 (courier/van, light rigid)$26.87/hr$33.59/hr
Grade 2 (rigid over 4.5t)$27.51/hr$34.39/hr
Grade 3 (heavy rigid)$27.83/hr$34.79/hr
Grade 5 (semitrailer)$28.67/hr$35.84/hr
Grade 7 (B-double)$29.42/hr$36.78/hr
Grade 8 (road train)$30.28/hr$37.85/hr
Grade 10 (double road train)$31.55/hr$39.44/hr

Distribution centre and warehouse rates

Toll DC work sits under one of two floors depending on the operation. The transport award's distribution facility stream pays $27.83/hr (level 1), $28.32 (level 2) and $29.42 (level 3). The Storage Services and Wholesale Award pays Storeworker grade 1 $27.08/hr on commencement rising to $27.72 after 12 months, grade 2 $27.97, grade 3 $28.77 and grade 4 $29.61.

Casuals add 25% to every figure. Which floor applies depends on how the site is run — the site agreement (linked above for Brisbane and the Defence DCs) is the first document to check, because it names both the award underneath and the actual site rates.

Overtime, weekends and shifts

Transport award penalties for full-time and part-time employees:

  • Overtime: 150% for the first two hours, 200% after
  • Saturday: 150% — Sunday: 200%
  • Public holiday overtime: 250% (300% on Good Friday and Christmas Day)
  • Afternoon shift: 117.5% — night shift: 130%

Casuals: 175% Saturday, 225% Sunday, 275% public holidays (325% Good Friday and Christmas Day) — the loading is built into those percentages. Toll's agreements restructure some of this; the package must still beat the award overall. Check a specific shift with our penalty rates calculator.

Common Toll pay issues

The patterns worth checking on a Toll payslip:

  • Grade lag — driving heavier combinations than your paid grade covers.
  • Unpaid time — pre-start checks, load restraint, queuing at DCs and fuelling are work time, not goodwill.
  • Expired-agreement drift — with the national TWU agreement past its 30 June 2026 nominal expiry, its scheduled rises have run out while the award floor keeps rising each 1 July.
  • Casual loading absorbed — a flat "all-in" casual rate must still be at least 25% above the award base plus the penalties for when you actually work.

What to do if you're underpaid

Keep your run sheets or timesheets and six months of payslips, and price the gap with our back-pay calculator. Raise it in writing with your depot or site manager; the TWU or UWU can act on agreement matters. Unresolved, the Fair Work Ombudsman (13 13 94) recovers underpayments at no cost — up to six years back.
