What award covers Amazon warehouse workers?
Amazon Australia's fulfilment centre workers — pickers, packers, stowers, sorters and forklift operators — are covered by the Storage Services and Wholesale Award 2020 (MA000084).
Unlike the Coles and Woolworths distribution networks, Amazon Australia has no enterprise agreement — there is none registered with the Fair Work Commission. That means the award is not just a floor buried under an EA: it is the actual legal minimum for every hour you work. Amazon advertises starting rates above these figures — treat the advertised rate as your contractual rate and the award as the line it can never fall below, whatever your roster looks like.

Note the grade 1 rate has built-in service steps — your minimum rises automatically at 3 months and again at 12 months, even if your advertised rate doesn't move. This award has no junior rate scale: the adult classification rates above apply regardless of age.
Shift loadings and weekend penalties
Fulfilment centres run around the clock, and this is where the award matters most. Permanent rates on a grade 1 commencement base ($27.08/hr):
- Afternoon shift: 115% — $31.14/hr
- Night shift: 130% — $35.20/hr
- Saturday: 150% — $40.62/hr
- Sunday: 200% — $54.16/hr
- Public holiday: 250% — $67.70/hr
- Overtime: 150% for the first 2 hours, 200% after that
If Amazon pays you a flat above-award rate, that rate must still clear these multiplied minimums for every penalty hour — a loaded flat rate that beats the award on a Tuesday morning can fall under it on a Sunday night. For casuals, how the 25% loading interacts with overtime under this award isn't something to guess at — verify your exact scenario with the Fair Work Ombudsman's Pay and Conditions Tool.
Advertised rate vs award floor — how to check yours
Amazon's job ads quote an hourly figure that sits above the award floor. Three checks worth doing:
- Multiply it out for your actual roster. Take a fortnight with weekend or night shifts, price every hour at the award multipliers above, and compare the total with your gross pay. The advertised rate must beat the award in total and for the penalty hours, not just on paper.
- Check your grade. Regular forklift or high-reach work, or directing other workers, belongs above grade 1. The service steps within grade 1 apply automatically.
- Casual conversion. Regular casuals have a pathway to permanent employment under the Fair Work Act — Amazon must notify eligible casuals.
Common Amazon warehouse pay issues
Watch for:
- Unpaid time at security screening — time under the employer's control matters. If you're required to queue for bag checks after clocking off, question it.
- Night and afternoon loadings missed on rotating rosters — payroll systems misclassify shift spans more often than you'd think.
- Overtime absorbed into the flat rate — overtime attracts 150%/200% of the award base as a minimum, regardless of your flat rate, unless your total pay still clears it.
- Labour-hire differences — if you're engaged through an agency alongside directly-hired Amazon staff, compare rates. Regulated labour hire arrangements are required to keep agency pay in line.
What to do if you're underpaid
Export your shift history from the rostering app, line it up against your payslips, and use our back-pay calculator to price the gap at award rates. Raise it with your area manager or HR in writing. If it isn't resolved, the Fair Work Ombudsman (13 13 94) handles award underpayment complaints, and you have six years to recover the money.
