- How this is worked out
- For 40 male workers, the Code recommends 2 closet pans (1 per 20 males) and 2 urinals (1 per 25 males). For 30 female workers, the Code recommends 2 closet pans (1 per 15 females). Numbers are rounded up, with a minimum of 1 of each where that gender is present.
- Single unisex toilet?
- A single unisex toilet is not enough for this workplace under the Code's exception. That exception only applies where 10 or fewer people work there and 2 or fewer are of one gender. Provide separate, signposted male and female facilities (or enough unisex toilets) to meet the recommended numbers.
- Other facilities you must provide
- Clean drinking water: provide free, clean drinking water that is accessible at all times, separate from toilet and washing facilities.
- Washing facilities: provide hand basins with clean running water, soap and a means of drying hands, located near toilets and eating areas.
- Eating facilities: provide a clean, hygienic space to eat and prepare food and drinks, with seating, protection from the weather, and a way to keep food and drinks at a safe temperature.

- Model WHS Regulations reg 41 (duty to provide adequate facilities) and the model Code of Practice "Managing the work environment and facilities" (Safe Work Australia). The toilet ratios — 1 closet pan per 20 males, 1 urinal per 25 males, and 1 closet pan per 15 females — are recommendations in the Code, not strict legal rules.
This is general information, not legal advice. Facility needs vary with your workplace, the building you occupy and your jurisdiction. Check reg 41, the current model Code, the National Construction Code and your own regulator's guidance before relying on these figures.
